The Estate

Smeaton Estate

Smeaton Estate, a working farm of 450 acres, has been owned and run by the Gray family since 1934. Set in the beautiful East Lothian countryside the family have carefully maintained and preserved the natural beauty of the estate as well as working the land.

Perfect for a day trip or longer stay

With beautiful parkland, woodland and lake, Smeaton Estate is home to a variety of wildlife (including both fallow and roe deer) and the not so wild (our Highland cows for example) and has a traditional nursery garden and award winning tea room serving delicious homemade cakes, as well as holiday cottages for longer stays.

Just 45 minutes from the centre of Edinburgh in the peaceful village of East Linton the estate is also the perfect base from which to explore the fabulous East Lothian sandy beaches, the Lammermuir hills or the numerous golf courses East Lothian has to offer.

Estate features

The grounds of the old mansion house (sadly demolished in the 1950s) are now parkland open to the public to explore. In the 1830s the then owner of the estate created a lake and arboretum, a legacy which the Gray family have carefully conserved. The collection of trees around the lake has earnt it a place in the National Tree Collection of Scotland (NTCS) and with a well maintained path it is one of the few significant tree collections in Scotland open to the public all year round. The collection of rhododendrons and the Snow drop carpets are other high lights at the right time of year!

Our Highland cows can be seen enjoying the scenery of the old mansion house gardens and often come over to check out the visitors!
